What is student exchange?Student exchanges were first started after World War I when families in different countries swapped sons for a while. It was revived again after World War II with the idea that selected students would be good ambassadors for their countries. Not many people took part because it was extremely expensive, travel was slow and communication was difficult from New Zealand. With the advent of cheap air travel and excellent communication systems, costs have dropped and more families have felt comfortable sending their young people to live with welcoming volunteer families in another country. NZIIU’s programmes allow students to make their own choice of country and length of stay provided they qualify and can pass our application procedures. While these procedures are careful and detailed, most students who want to go are able to spend their exchange with a volunteer family and go to school in the country of their choice. We prepare students carefully and provide support while they are away. There is no obligation to host in return. |
