A non-profit, charitable trust

What it costs

You need to be able to cover:

  • The fee
  • The airfare
  • Visa costs in some countries
  • Pocket money
  • Travel to and from school
  • School lunches
  • Some other costs depending on the country

The Fee

Have a look at the section Understanding the fee to get a better idea of how it is structured.

Families are all volunteers.

Host families agree to provide free board and accept you as part of the family. They deserve an occasional reward.

Daily expenses

Transport to school can be free or occasionally quite expensive. You also have to be prepared to pay for your school lunches, pocket money and stationery.

Every country has their own way of doing things and we give the best advice we can well before you leave. Most of this advice is based on what we’ve been told by returning students.

Pocket money

In Europe you need to have 200 Euros a month available. Most people seem to manage quite well on this but some are shopaholics while others spend very little.

Money transfers

You need to talk to your bank before you leave to see what will be the best way to transfer money from New Zealand with the least cost. We will give you advice offered by returned students and our own experience but what you do is up to you.

About Us

NZIIU is an incorporated non-profit, charitable trust approved by the Ministry of Education to promote international understanding through overseas student exchange. Our quality host family homestay programmes have been operating for over 20 years and in that time thousands of young people have experienced educational and cultural exchanges between New Zealand and other countries.
