Who can go
Criteria
You need to apply while enrolled in a NZ school.
You need to have regular passes in Achievement Standards. Very good passes help but you also need the right personal skills.
Most countries are either English-speaking or require at least two years of continuous study before you can be accepted. It is wise to have studied Japanese for three years before you go to Japan. You don’t need to have studied the language when you apply for Germany, Italy, Netherlands or Brazil.
You’re most likely to be successful and have fun if you are sociable, positive, optimistic, perceptive, tolerant,self-confident, resilient and intelligent.
We like to give you a chance but if we think exchange is risky for you, we’ll let you know.
The initial form is easy. The full form takes effort. Some people have everything they need within a couple of weeks while others take three months to get it right. It’s best to get started well before the deadline.
This is the final stage of the application process and is a time when we get to know each other better. Interviews take place at home with at least one parent present and able to take part. Most people who get to this stage are able to go. If everything works we'll start making arrangements.
