Welcome to New Zealand!

Studying abroad in New Zealand with NZIIU’s high school programme will give you a chance to live and learn in one of the world’s most stunning and safe countries.

What’s school like in New Zealand?

New Zealand schools encourage students to participate in sports and cultural activities alongside their academic studies. Long-term exchange and FFP students can join sports teams and may even play at an inter-school or national level. Some schools offer over 45 different sports such as basketball, rugby, soccer, badminton, netball, tennis, table tennis, cricket, swimming, and more.

Students may also choose to take part in orchestras, bands, and choirs. Music tuition is available at some schools at a small additional cost. Most schools also have an annual school production and participate in festivals and events involving singing, dancing, drama, music, lighting, photography, and design. These are all wonderful opportunities for international students.

Our high school programmes

We offer three main inbound high school programmes:

  • High school exchange programmes (3 months – 1 year)
  • Short-term tour programmes (1 – 4 weeks)
  • Full Fee Paying (FFP) programmes (3 months – 3 years)

These programmes will enable you to experience what it’s like to attend high school as a ‘Kiwi’ and live with a New Zealand family. Immerse yourself in a culture where hiking, playing rugby, learning about Māori life, and walking barefoot through town are all part of a day’s adventure.

You’ll receive strong support to help you integrate into your school community and host family, including:

  • An arrival orientation alongside other exchange students
  • Ongoing in-person visits and meetings with your local coordinator
  • The opportunity to join sports teams and participate in extracurricular activities

Organised, chaperoned sightseeing and camping trips around New Zealand are also organised throughout the year, giving you the chance to see much of this beautiful country.
